About the Artist
Ragnar Kjartansson is an Icelandic performance artist and was born in 1976 in Reykjavik, where he still lives. At a young age Kjartansson has been exposed to theater because of his parents, his mother who was an actress in Iceland and his father who is now a director and play writer. He attended a visual arts school called Royal Academy in 2000 were he took a course on Feminist Art and learned all about people like Marina Abramovic and Vito Acconci. He later learned the art of blending the fake and repetitively rehearsed world of theatrics. His pieces are characterized by the playing with different emotions like sorrow, happiness, beauty and horror. He uses both his background as a musician and in theater to create his pieces. Formal Analysis Kjartansson works simultaneously as an artist and a musician to create his installations. He uses the skills he has learned over the years to help make interesting theatrical art installations that express elements like sorrow by using music to help create the vibe. Content Analysis Ragnar Kjartansson’s art pieces are characterized by the play between contradicting feelings because of his ability to blend two opposites like happiness and sorrow. He uses opposite emotions as a way to make the audience feel comfortable or at ease before making them feel the opposite emotion. It’s a different way to connect to the audience but its commonly used in theater. Synthesis/ My Experience I’ll admit although I do admire this artist’s method of catching the audience’s attention because of his background in theater I do like him more. For me its like watching a dramatic scene in a movie and one minute the director is making you feel such joy before ripping away your idea of how the movie was actually going to end and the mood changes to sad sorrow music. I really want to see how this artist grows and I think I’m going to continue to follow his artwork.
