ABOUT THE ARTIST Dread Scott was born in Hyde Park, chicago. His father was photographer and his mother took care of him growing up. He got his name from a black slave called dred scott. He wanted to push boundaries similarily to how the slave did when wanting freedom. Scott received his first national attention as an artist at the school of art institution of chicago in 1989. He created a controversial art piece of the american flag which started to get him known. Despite his minor set back of his art being called many negative things he still continued to make art and sharing it with the community. FORMAL ANALYSIS Scott pieces contain different forms of photography, installations, and screen videos. His work is very creative and catches the audiences attention. His art pieces use different types of colors and more often then not they are bold colors that can be very moving and vibrant which can signify power. His powerful pieces are also often political pieces are driven toward political issues. CONTENT ANALYSIS His content is driven toward inequality and being a voice for his community through his artwork. He uses the negative energy toward his pieces and uses it to fight back and push boundaries. His main goal is for others to see the world with less pain and suffering. Synthesis/ my experience I like that dread scott is willing to push boundaries and go beyond what others may think. I also think that the way he portrays the community and stands up for people in the society giving people a free voice. ABOUT THE ARTIST
Nadya Tolokonnikova was born on November 7, 1989 in russia. She is a russian artist, who during her early years was fascinated with modern literature. Toloknnikova attended Moscow State University for philosophy and later married her now husband. They both then joined the Voina art group and they then acted with many bold and outgoing performances. They later had a daughter together and continued to create bold art pieces. It wasn't until she was convicted of acting in a voilent manner at a performance that she was sentenced to two years in prison. She was later released early and continues to fight for women. Formal Analysis She is a part of the performance group Voina which was founded in 2006. The group includes a total of about 60 artists and performers that have the same views and are very proactive in there community. The group has their faces covered asa a way to symbolize a lack of personality and conveys the idea gender. Content Analysis Her aim is to highlight the absurdities in the lives of society members. Each performance that is put on is aimed to show the underlying political messages to fight for women. There duty is to fight for equality in the community. Her pieces are very controversial and very provocative which are made to make people see what is going on. It is made to turn head and make a change. My experience I like what Nadya is fighting for and how she does so. I myself don't feel like id be able to be as outgoing in the same manner she does go against what others believe . She puts herself out there and even got arrest and sent to prison for what she believes in which i admire.
