About the Artist
Revok aka Jason William is a graffiti artist who was born in 1977 in riverside California. He began to discover art at an early age because of his father and his collection of album covers, comic books and Skateborading culture growing up as a kid. He would sneak out at night to write graffiti and has become a member of the Seventh Letter, Famous west coast collective of artist and Mad Society Kings (MSK), which is a world known graffiti crew. He successfully created a reputation as an influential graffiti painter who’s work has been in both gallery and museum spaces. Due to a few graffiti crimes he is no longer able to paint mural in Los Angeles even if he is paid to. He later moved to Detroit to get away from it all and started to paint murals there and created the Detroit Beautification Project with friends. In 2015 he reappear with his LA solo exhibition that represented the Revok in new light. These works represent the culmination of his ideas since returning to the city and has been exhibited in the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles as well as the Pasadena Museum of Contemporary Art. Formal Analysis Revok's graffiti art work has really broken boundaries when it comes to what is legal and illegal on the streets. He takes a stance by pushing the creative limits of those around him by continuing to express his graffiti work in different areas of the city. He spray paints both large and small designs like patterns and images along with these very interesting shapes that communicate messages to the community using bold colors. Content Analysis His ideas to bring the community together using graffiti art and various colors in order to discuss and admire his work. As he has developed as an artist so has his work and the different phases of his life experiences has changed the way his artwork looks and the messages it sends out to others. Its a unique style that represents Revok so well. My Experience After researching about Revok I have come to appreciate graffiti art work so much more. I also think that by learning about his story it made me think about the stories of every other artist that has done graffiti as well as other art pieces around my city. Not only do i know how a new view on graffiti art but i also got to experience it for myself through our activity this week and by no means is it easy. It takes time and patience along with creativity to make your ideas come to life the way you want them to especially using spray paint. |
