About the Artist
Maika Elan is a freelance photographer who lives in Hanoi. She studied sociology at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi. She started to take photos of her daily and private life starting in 2008. She soon turned photography into her profession after working on her first collaboration project for editorial clients and fashion firm in Vietnam. Maika later moved onto documentary photography in 2010 with The Pink Choice, the project focused on the personal lives of gay couples. She was also awarded the "best photo essay" twice and the "best single photo" in 2010 along with the being the finalist at Asian Women Photographers. Formal Analysis Maika Elan is a photographer who has won many awards since she started taking photographs in 2008. She has done different exhibitions starting as far as 2009 to 2015. Her first solo exhibition has been hosted at Goethe Institut in Hanoi in 2012 and has also won first place for her stories for The Pink Choice along with first place for her documentary story at Pride Photo Award in 2013. Content Analysis The pictures that Maika takes photos have such a different message and some pictures are vibrant with color while others are raw and realistic. Some of her photographs are close up shots of peoples faces in a festival and others are of her father taken with some kind of filter. My Experience I do like some of Maika's photographs but others i simply do not understand and i know there is a message there but can't figure it out and can't make sense of them. I do admit the way some of the photos are taken they look cool and some are raw and realistic however some don't make sense to me. I do appreciate her art though and the accomplishments she has made as an artist.
